An operator receives a call from a man reporting a robbery and murder. He gives a residential address in San Francisco and then hangs up. Investigators respond immediately and find a middle aged woman dead in her garage. Two days later they question her estranged husband - an ex-convict - but he was in Mexico at the time of the murder. The only evidence left at the scene are two sets of mysterious fingerprints, not belonging to the victim or her husband. The case remains cold for 11 years and then detectives get an urgent call. The crime lab reports that fingerprints match a man recently arrested in a bar fight. But he, too, has a solid alibi.

In the middle of the night a highway police officer spots an empty car off I-5 near Sacramento. A few hours later a young woman's body is found 20 miles away. Police are no closer to solving the case when two more women's bodies are found near local highways. It appears to be the work of a serial killer. Detectives need to solve the case before another woman is murdered.

After a late night out, Charles Williams returned to his apartment and found his roommate Benjamin's backpack lying on the steps and the door unlocked. He calls 911 to report a possible burglary. Inside, there's no sign of Benjamin. Police search everywhere and soon find him in a neighbor's yard, dead. The motive is mysterious - there's no sign of a break-in and little is missing. It's as if the killer was looking for something specific.

Late at night, a man driving home sees a pickup truck pulled over by what looks like a police car. But the activity is anything but routine - 2 men, one wearing a uniform and the other a Halloween mask are seen forcing a woman into the police car and then they speed away. With little to go on, investigators wait for a missing person's report. Early the next morning they get one - the suspected victim's husband calls police to report his wife's been kidnapped and her kidnappers want $250,000 in cash.

Police receive a frantic phone call from a woman. She had dropped her husband, Dr. Michael Tavis, off at his plastic surgery practice and as she was leaving heard gunshots come from inside. Dr. Tavis is shot in the chest and laying beside his office manager who has also been critically injured. Police immediately begin to examine the relationship between the two and question whether this could be the work of an angry wife. The only witness quickly becomes the only suspect.
